European refiners are under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, ensure economic viability and adapt to evolving regulations. At one large refinery, an enhanced decarbonization roadmap was developed and optimized using the Integrated Process, Energy, Emissions and Economics Model (IP3EM). A refinery-wide digital twin was applied to evaluate more than 100 opportunities, prioritize projects by cost, risk and impact, and assess potential improvements in energy use. This approach supported the refinery’s goal of achieving a 30% emissions reduction by 2030 and received recognition at the European Refining Technology Conference (ERTC).
