KBC upgrades holistic energy management system to enable real-time analysis for industrial operations

Customizable digital twin provides one version of the truth across all energy related operations with automatic scheduling/planning updates, real-time cost optimization, and energy monitoring.

KBC (A Yokogawa Company) announces the release of Visual MESA Energy Management System™ 6.2 (VM-EMS) for industrial facilities. It provides the organization with a holistic way to manage energy use by automated optimal schedule executions and a new flexible data source structure, including a PI-Asset Framework interface for integration with the OSIsoft PI real-time database.

Energy costs are the largest expense for most companies. With organizations moving to cleaner fuels combined with environmental regulations for emissions, it is critical for operators to optimize costs to remain competitive. However, most organizations store data related to energy in multiple repositories. This can result in data inaccuracies with everyone making decisions based on their version of the truth, often leading to actions that are detrimental to overall operations goals and expenditures.

VM-EMS 6.2 allows organizations to gather information from their various repositories and data sources, including the traditional OPC interface. The flexible data source structure in the VM-EMS allows for adding new interfaces on demand. In addition, a new PI-AF interface available in this release enables tight integration with the OSIsoft PI real-time database. This provides the organization with a holistic way to manage energy use by data acquisition and sharing across all areas through customized interfaces.

Other new capabilities allow users to start moving towards an autonomous operation, saving time for operators and decision-making personnel. VM-EMS calculates optimal actions to be taken in real-time to reduce energy related operational costs and emissions. It also provides monitoring and reporting tools to improve energy production and distribution efficiency, allowing operators to make quick and accurate responses. This is done through a real-time optimizer application that immediately adapts to current operations while considering overall objectives and guidelines from a moving scheduling horizon.

Users can now set up “Automatic Energy Schedule Runs” at a predefined frequency. The system then automatically generates the optimal schedule without operator intervention by autonomously collecting required information about plant and market conditions, as well as other external forecasts. This scheduling automation combined with parallelization strategies to perform calculations, saves time, and helps users to make efficient decisions.
