KBC (A Yokogawa Company) announces the release of Visual MESA® Energy Management System 7.0 (VM-EMS), which aligns with all energy paths that companies consider within the energy transition landscape. It provides operators with an energy digital twin that has the necessary tools to support business decisions on how to best manage renewable, conventional, and combined energy systems, including storage and emissions.
Organizations are evolving from fossil-fuel based centralized energy systems to renewable based distributed systems to attain carbon neutrality, but energy remains their biggest expense. In addition, most companies store energy related data in multiple repositories. This often results in data access limitations or even inaccuracies that lead to plans and actions that are detrimental to overall operation goals, emissions, and expenditures.
As a Hydrocarbon Processing 2021 Award Finalist in the Sustainability Category, the VM-EMS helps operators manage greenhouse gas emissions. Users can now define carbon emissions as the objective function to minimize. This lets them optimize emissions in real time while taking into consideration cost impact. This significantly helps operators in complying with the net zero emissions target.
They can also take advantage of process-side energy use and performance indicators while optimizing and monitoring the supply and distribution side, with all this driving to lower energy use cost, increased efficiency, and lower carbon emissions.
Users can now have VM-EMS implemented in the cloud to reduce deployment expense and model maintenance costs. In this new environment, operators can run their entire industrial site's utility system, including production and use of steam, fuel, power, hydrogen, boiler feed water, and emissions.

It helps to obtain a more robust, reliable, and optimal operation while satisfying environmental regulations,” said Pablo Jimenez-Asenjo, Global VM Business Line Leader. “An energy digital twin can offer significant emissions reduction and cost savings.”
In addition, the system now allows users to automatically execute and directly pass optimal multi-period scheduling targets to the real-time optimizer without the need for operator intervention. This prevents inconsistencies coming from different decision-making levels.
