Cost-effective, software-based flow surveillance for upstream oil and gas

KBC (A Yokogawa Company) announces the release of new functionality for its production twin application, KBC Acuity™ Virtual Flow Meter (VFM). Allocating well production and estimating three-phase flow accurately have been challenging for upstream operators, who often rely on physical metering and well testing that are costly and difficult to scale. Designed for ongoing production monitoring, KBC Acuity VFM delivers near real-time estimates of oil, gas, and water flow to provide a scalable, data-driven, and non-invasive alternative. By aligning live operational data with simulation models, KBC Acuity VFM provides continuous visibility into flow behavior that enables predictive management, performance optimization, and multiphase flow meter (MPFM) data validation, while also detecting anomalies, reducing uncertainty, and lowering OpEx - without additional hardware or sacrificing data integrity.

According to research, the global market for flow metering technologies, including VFMs, is projected to grow from $9.4 billion in 2023 to $14 billion by 2031. This growth is fueled by digital transformation and real-time measurements. Pipeline & Gas Journal reported that flow measurement errors already cost the oil and gas sector an estimated $3.5 billion annually, which makes data accuracy operational insight a financial urgency.

Enhanced benefits and features:

  • Improve flow visibility with physics-based flow estimation for oil, gas, and water phases.
  • Increase flexibility and scalability via cloud-native deployment.
  • Accelerate deployment with connectivity to data historians and IIoT-enabled field devices.
  • Strengthen decision-making using tailored dashboards and advanced analytics.

“Reliable, real-time flow data is essential for efficient production management. We’re helping operators modernize how they monitor flow — shifting from hardware dependency to intelligent, software-based surveillance,” said Rolando Gabarron, Senior Digital Product Manager at KBC. This shift not only enhances operational insight but also supports KBC’s broader mission to drive innovation through digital transformation.

This latest enhancement expands KBC Acuity’s initial capabilities by introducing simulation and analytics tools that support production twin and process twin solutions across upstream and downstream. As part of the KBC Acuity Industrial Cloud Suite, it natively integrates with KBC’s simulation suite — Petro-SIM®, Maximus®, Multiflash®, and Visual MESA® to support enterprise-wide deployment and simplify complex modeling workflows while Bringing Decarbonization to Life®.
