Floating Production Facility Improves Mercury Management Accuracy

Advanced modeling delivers reliable predictions and guides safer, compliant designs

Challenge

An international energy company developing a complex floating production facility needed to understand how trace mercury behaved in gas and condensate streams. Their conventional model misrepresented mercury, creating inaccurate predictions and uncertainty around corrosion control, safety, and export compliance.

Solution

KBC used Petro-SIM® integrated with Multiflash®, applying CPA-Infochem EoS and a dedicated mercury model to build a multi-phase, multi-stream simulation model of the entire FPSO gas processing system. This enabled accurate predictions of mercury distribution under a wide range of operating scenarios.

Results

The study revealed mercury’s true distribution across phases and flagged condensate risks early. It also identified opportunities to remove liquid and solid mercury at separation points, giving the client the confidence to design a safer, compliant, and cost-effective operations.
