European Chemical Manufacturer Unlocks 12 Percent Energy Savings

Challenge

A leading European chemical manufacturer wanted to uncover additional opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Although several initiatives were already in place, the site aimed to identify new projects to update its ISO 50001 energy saving plan and sustain progress toward its sustainability goals. The company also sought to lower the scale and cost of future decarbonization measures through improved overall energy performance.

Solution

KBC applied its Strategic Energy Review (SER) methodology across the site to systematically identify performance gaps and new opportunities for savings. The review combined technical analysis with on-site assessments, covering all major energy users.

Techniques such as Process Flow Diagram (PFD) reviews, benchmarking, Pinch Analysis, steam system modelling, and mechanical walkthroughs were used to highlight where improvements could deliver the greatest impact.

The findings were consolidated into a comprehensive Investment Roadmap, which defined the total achievable energy savings and prioritized actions for implementation. Each project was validated in the site steam model to ensure accurate, realistic results.

Results

The review identified 22 potential energy-saving projects, with 10 high-impact initiatives selected for inclusion in the Investment RoadMap. Together, these deliver a 12% reduction in the site’s total energy bill.

The projects were also added to the site’s ISO 50001 energy saving plan, providing a strong foundation for ongoing improvement. By optimizing energy efficiency at the system level, the manufacturer will significantly reduce the cost and scale of future decarbonization measures.

Key opportunities included fired heater tuning, implementation of a Digital Energy Management System (D-EMS), and waste heat recovery projects.
