KBC, a leading provider of consulting and software solutions to the hydrocarbon processing industry, is happy to collaborate with Prof. João A.P. Coutinho’s group from CICECO, University of Aveiro to develop a generalized extension of the CPA model by supporting a PhD project and providing copies of Multiflash and Petro-SIM for research and educational purposes. KBC has already collaborated with Prof. João A.P. Coutinho before with implementation of the Coutinho Wax model as the default wax model in Multiflash.

The CPA model is the standard property package in Multiflash for all hydrate and asphaltene calculations. It is also the recommended model for all mixtures containing hydrocarbons water, alcohols and salts. Examples of its successful use include hydrate risk assessment, hydrate inhibition and inhibitor partitioning, asphaltene risk and precipitation assessment and mercury distribution in gas processing plants.

CPA provides the robustness of a cubic equation of state with an explicit association contribution that deals with associating species such as water and alcohols. Only KBC provides CPA in commercial software and this is a very well recognized model in the industry.

This initiative shows the leading role that Multiflash developers have in this area by creating new developments for this model to solve the new problems of the industry,” says Coutinho.

The CPA model in Multiflash, although outperforming in terms of accuracy and robustness, is limited to a few hydrogen bonding species, namely water, simple alcohols and glycols. To keep the leading position in the CPA model, KBC aims to improve and generalize it, developing this model for a larger range of chemicals in both upstream and downstream applications.

The University of Aveiro research group includes more than 10 postdocs and 15 PhD students. Current research topics include Biotechnology, Biorefineries and Petroleum Technology (equilibrium and transport properties, wax precipitation, enhanced oil recovery and thiol desulfurisation).

Among other institutions and companies, the group actively collaborates with CERE (Technical University of Denmark), Laboratoire de Fluides Compléxes (Université de Pau e des Pays de L’Adour, France), MATGAS (Barcelona), Galp Energia (Portugal), Partex (Portugal), Petrobras (Brazil) and a significant number of Brazilian universities.
