Development of Diploma in chemical operations

As part of a larger organizational project, KBC partnered with a South African university to jointly design and develop a qualification aimed at training young diplomats for employment in the local oil and petrochemicals industry.

The challenge

The primary challenge was to create a pool of well-qualified operational staff from local communities who were typically under-educated. Unique, local economic regulations had to be complied, along with standard industry regulations.

The working experience of KBC consultants was drawn on to design and develop a practical curriculum outline in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Subjects included chemistry, computer skills, physics, process equipment and operation. KBC provided an extensive library of operator fundamentals training materials that were included in Years 1 and 2 of the qualification. In addition, KBC provided support in designing a mini-plant for use by students throughout their training.

The results

KBC created an approved National Diploma in Chemical Process Operations, which was recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Tuition commenced in 2012 with a class of 15 students.
